My name is Hutch DeLoach and I live with my soul mate and amazing wife of 41 years here on Live Oak Island in Florida. We’re located due south of Tallahassee down on the Gulf of Mexico.
I started this blog back in September of 2005. Being a techie, my original motivation was to take a deep dive and learn more about this relatively new thing at that time called blogging.
When I started this blog, the whole world of social media was in its infancy. Facebook was barely a year and a half old and it would be another six months before Twitter was introduced.
For me, blogging was an instant fit. It really scratched a lot of itches including my love for writing, being creative and artistic, and of course the technology.
To start with, I decided to focus the blog on the topic of running – a longtime passion of mine and something I had already been doing consistently at that time for 15 years. I soon discovered just how much fun it was to have other runners drop by and leave a comment or a word of encouragement.
Over a period of about three and a half years, I ran a virtual cross-country run of 2,400 miles from Savannah, Georgia to San Diego, California. During those years, I researched and blogged about my runs and about some of the small towns that my virtual track had me passing through.
When I first created the blog, I decided to do it the hard way and actually built it from scratch using HTML and PHP. I even engineered a MYSQL database so I could host comments from readers. It wasn’t until October 4, 2009 that I finally accepted I was putting in way too much effort for far too little return and ported the blog over to WordPress. I thought I had really arrived when I managed to post my first blog entry from the Blackberry mobile phone that I owned back then.
Somewhere along the blogging trail, only a few years later, I began to expand the scope of my writing to include other interests. I didn’t really plan to move the blog in that direction – it just sort of happened. With that change, the blog basically became little more than an online personal scrapbook.
Needless to say, the readers quit dropping by. I decided at the time that this might be a good thing. After all, it never occurred to me that I would take such a beating from a couple of highly offended runners for my jabs at the barefoot running shoe craze.
A few more years passed and I eventually lost interest entirely in the idea of an online scrapbook. I posted my last entry on August 7, 2016.
Just over a year has passed since then. It’s now October 24, 2017 and I’m hoping to resurrect this dusty old thing and take it back to the place from which it came – random reflections upon fitness and running. I hope you enjoy your visit. See you on the road!
